Adult Tap Dance Classes at Open Stage – Fun, Friendly, and Community-Focused

Open Stage currently offers three tap classes for adults, all taught by our experienced and enthusiastic instructor, Lillian, a qualified ISTD dance teacher. Our classes are designed to suit all abilities, from absolute beginners to advanced dancers, and provide a friendly, welcoming space where adults can enjoy movement, music, and friendship. Many participants have been attending for years, particularly in the intermediate class, highlighting the long-term enjoyment and community spirit these sessions foster.

You will learn tap steps and routines to a wide variety of music, from Broadway classics to pop hits, making each class fun, energising, and rewarding. Tap dancing is a fantastic way to improve balance, coordination, posture, and core strength, strengthen your legs and lower body, increase stamina and cardiovascular fitness, and stimulate mental focus and memory. It’s also an excellent stress reliever, boosting mood and releasing feel-good endorphins, all while moving to the beat! Tap shoes are available in a range of sizes if needed.

Our classes also have a strong social and community focus. Members enjoy arriving early or staying after class for a cuppa and a chat, forming lasting friendships and connecting with others who share a love of dance. The social side of our tap classes is just as important as the dancing itself, creating a warm, supportive environment where everyone feels included and motivated.

  • Absolute Beginners Tap – Wednesday evenings, perfect for those new to tap or returning after a break.

  • Over 50s Tap (Beginners & Improvers) – Thursday mornings, a slower-paced class tailored to the abilities and needs of older adults.

  • Intermediate and Beyond Tap – Thursday evenings, for more experienced dancers, including members who have enjoyed these classes for over a decade.

Tap classes are a fun and engaging way to stay active, improve wellbeing, and connect with a friendly community. Check our booking site for the most recent course dates and come along to join the rhythm, movement, and friendship of Open Stage tap!

TAI CHI

Tai Chi with Doris – Gentle, Healthy, and Social

Doris’s Tai Chi classes are perfect for adults who are improvers looking to develop their practice in a friendly and supportive environment. As a qualified Tai Chi Instructor and Ballroom Dance Teacher with many years of experience, Doris combines her knowledge of movement, balance, and breathing to create sessions that are both enjoyable and beneficial for body and mind.

Each class covers the three key aspects of Tai Chi:

  • Waking The Body – a gentle warm-up to loosen muscles, mobilise joints, and prepare the body for movement.

  • Tai Chi Moves and Forms – exercises designed to improve balance, coordination, and control of movement, helping you feel more agile and confident in everyday life.

  • QiGong Exercises – focusing on deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and circulation, leaving you feeling calm, energised, and centred.

Practising Tai Chi with Doris has many health and wellbeing benefits for adults. It can reduce stress, improve posture, enhance flexibility, boost circulation, and encourage a deeper mind-body connection. Regular practice supports both physical and mental health, making it a wonderful activity for relaxation, fitness, and mindfulness.

Our sessions also have a lovely social side. Many participants enjoy arriving early to the community café for a cup of tea and a chat, and each class ends with time to sit together, share stories, and catch up. Over time, the sessions have become a place where new friendships are formed and everyone feels welcomed and included.

Tai Chi with Doris is suitable for adults at any level, though particularly beneficial for those who have some prior experience and want to improve their technique and confidence. Comfortable clothing is recommended to allow free, relaxed movement.

Classes take place on Tuesday mornings. Check our booking site for the most recent course dates and join us for a session that will energise your body, calm your mind, and connect you with a friendly community.
